This Holiday season is going to be very special for me. Its not a secret that my whole family has been scattered across the world for many years. I am in Italy, mom in the US, my brother in Germany and dad in Ukraine. Talking about International families… But it just makes every moment together that much more special. And this year, for the first time in over eight years, we will be celebrating this holiday season together!
One of the most exciting parts about it is that they are all coming to my home and favourite place in the world-Rome, Italy. So I will get a chance to show around, take them to some of my favourite places and share my eternal love for the Eternal City.
As we are getting ready to celebrate this Holiday season and to spend as much time as possible with our loved ones, the biggest question is how am I going to stay consistent with my healthy lifestyle. Between holiday shopping, Christmas decorations, work parties, gift wrapping and enjoying your friends and family, putting healthy lifestyle aside seems like the obvious choice. After all, something’s gotta give. Right? Well, not necessarily.
If you want to look fabulous during all the holiday parties (I am talking about glowing skin and shiny hair), have tons of energy for all the activities and to stay bloat free for all the events then taking care of your mind and body should still be on your priority list. Plus, why would you put aside all that hard work you’ve being clocking in the whole year?!
So this Holiday Season, why don’t we take advantage of a three super simple and affective ways to balance a healthy lifestyle with family and friends?!
1. Pencil it in!
This first tip might seem obvious, but it makes all the difference. Schedule your workouts! Yes, yes. I am not talking about making a mental note that on Monday you will workout. This has to be put into your calendar just like you do with all the important events in your life be it a conference call, a meeting, an exam or your kids dancing lesson or a football practice. Write it down into your calendar and be specific: Workout on Monday 1:30PM-2:30PM. And do it at least for the whole week in advance. Go ahead! I will wait!
2. If You Cannot Beat Me, Join Me
My whole family consists of early birds. Everyone wakes up super early and of course the first thing they want to do is to gather around for a big breakfast. Lots of coffee, caviar sandwiches (I know it sounds totally disgusting, but caviar toast with coffee is still one of my favourite breakfast treats to this day), cookies and super loud conversations. And then somehow it can easily transition into lunch which can slowly lead to dinner.
But this kind of gatherings can really get you off track with the regular schedule. And I completely understand how you don’t want to leave your family alone even for a second, especially if you haven’t seen them for a long time. So the solution is to ask them to join you for a workout!
If they are super active, like you, it will be easy. Take them to the nearby park for a jog or a HIIT workout. Make it competitive! See who can run the fastest or hold a squat the longest. This kind of activities will bring you even closer together. And will be something to talk about during your next table gathering.
Now if it is challenging to get your family going, especially during the Holiday Season, make it as easy for them as possible. Turn on one of my YouTube Workouts (they are anywhere between 5-20 minutes without special equipment). Even if you workout for five minutes, trust me its so much better than nothing at all. Talk them into five, make it fun and I promise they will be asking for more.
And if you are not sure which one to choose, no worries. I got you! Here is one of the latest workouts I created specifically with the Holiday Season in mind.
Its challenging, fun and will take you only five minutes to complete! Everyone has five minutes!
One of my clients always looks for ways to spend quality time with her son. So she finds the most challenging exercise from each of my workouts and asks her son to repeat it with her. He tries and if he sees she can do it better than him, he wants to try again. One exercise after another and they get half an hour workout in while having lots of fun.
3. Get Back To It
I know I said it before and I will say it again.
One bad meal is not going to stop your progress. Its what you do afterwards that will have a direct impact on your results.
Lets say you were a little naughty and over-indulged “a bit” on those cookies while watching Elf with your family. Its not a big deal. But the next meal you must be back on track with your nutrition.
Of course, Holiday season is all about spending time with the loved ones. This is the season when the sense of the community is palpable. We call each other more, clear our schedules to spend more time with the loved ones; we are more patient, loving, caring and giving towards each other.
I truly believe that Holiday Season awakes in each one of us that playful, happy, loving inner child, making the whole world seem like one big magical places.
Enjoy every moment, be active, take care your mind and body and as always-stay fabulous!
